From this answer, I hope people can understand where people like us are
coming from. Without no pretence and no apologies, I hereby present to my
readers the essence of Fela’s message and struggle from a deep and authentic experience and knowledge of the man. This is a far cry from the brand name FELA, where he was portrayed as an indecisive man running to his mother for assurance and inspiration and championing polygamy. I thought I’d better end this review on a positive note, so I’ll begin with what I didn’t like about the book. With the advent of it’s easier to get a book published than ever before. The drawback is that some people throw their unedited texts up on the web that would never have been published by any type of commercial publisher, at least not in their present form. And that’s exactly my complaint about this book. The author should have invested in an editor. Now, the book is rampant with typo’s, even of in the names of world famous musicians (i.e. Miles Davies instead of Davis). The English used by the author is very old-fashioned (funny that an author with an anti-colonial message would use colonial English). The author repeats himself over and over again in the book. The term “Army Arrangement†appears almost 20 times. The fact that Fela’s wife Remi was writing her memoirs at least 8 times. The consequence is that the book makes for tedious reading. A good editor would condense this book by a third to a half.
The good thing about the book is that content-wise it’s OK. A lot of the info covered is already present in other biographies about the life of Fela Kuti. The author was a close associate of Fela up to approximately 1985. There is some new information in the book that made it worthwhile. There are two other biographies of Fela Kuti written by close associates (Kalakuta Diaries and The Ikoyi Prison Narratives) and these books too needed editing, but since they were relatively short texts it didn’t irritate me all that much as it did with this one.

An authentic sell written piece of history. Easy to read though complete. I recommand it to every afro beat aficionado.
