On a hot summer day, young Elijah Marshall stops plowing to give a drink of water to two strangers and invite them to lunch with his family. His neighborly act sets in motion events that will drastically change his future.
The strangers share a new religion, which the family embraces. But the neighbors want no part of Mormons. Multiple acts of unkindness and starvation drive the Marshall family to flee to the Mormon city on the banks of the Mississippi River, Nauvoo.
Then the path of Elijah's life takes perilous detours, with twists and turns he never expected to make.
In a 19th century coming-of-age story ranging from Pennsylvania to the Great Salt Lake Valley, Elijah plunges into harrowing adventures filled with sorrow, danger, and romance.
"Once again, Marsha Ward has woven an exciting historical novel. Elijah Marshall's adventures, trials, and faith building experiences as he journeys on The Zion Trail will keep readers turning pages until the end!"
~Loralee Evans, author of The Shores of Bountiful, and other novels.
"Marsha Ward's genius rises to her highest peak in The Zion Trail, with spot-on period terminology and meticulous attention to detail. It pulled me back to that time when my fourth-great-grandfather converted to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and took that Zion trail, and beyond."
~Debra Erfert, author of Window of Time, Changes of the Heart, It Takes a Sleuth, and Relative Evil.
Promised Valley, Book 1
For the early Mormon Saints, the Great Basin became their refuge in the West, beginning with the Great Salt Lake Valley. That was their land of promise. Historical novelist Marsha Ward begins her new series with the story of Elijah Marshall. Other tales featuring familiar characters, as well as new ones, will follow. Come for the adventure. Stay for the romance.

It is hard to understand why people would destroy their neighbors, that they have lived among for many years to vile vengeance just because they join a new church. To destroy their home , burn their barn and animals and their crops. ... and feel justified to do so. To leave a lovely family to starve through the winter. Unbelievable.
Annd , this was only the beginning of the Marshall family. Such faith of the family and specially Elijah, a small lad with such a strong testimony in touch with his inner feelings. The question is why would people take such terrible actions against really something that is none of their business? We know why now.... that little struggling
Church had truth on It's side. Jesus's church brought back to be established n Zion. Satan could not let that happen. I am So thankful Satan didn't win his one.
All and all this was an amazing book of courage, faith. Love of family and your God. How our pioneers struggled so that e may be free and live with peace an joy.
Another good book. The author Marsha Ward did a wonderful job giving light to this rather troublesome story. I loved it and will read book 2.

I very much enjoy reading LDS historical fiction and this book met my expectations. I recommend this this book to pioneer fiction enthusiasts. This book is well written and edited the few mistakes which I found very refreshing. The characters were realistic and I loved the storyline. You'll enjoy reading this book.
I think I have read everything Marsha has written. I love her stories and her attention to historic accuracy. I loved Etta and Elijah. And enjoyed the way problems were solved.
I found the language of the book entertaining in a historical way. I learned a few historical facts I didn't know.I enjoyed the book a lot. It brought home the struggles of the pioneers, I will look forward to reading book 2.
Review I enjoyed this story, for the most part. The author covered a great deal of information from the early days of the LDS church, highlighting one family's conversion and the struggles they encountered afterward. I loved the enduring message of never losing hope or never losing faith.
What a wonderful story. Knowing the Mormon story I have not read a more interesting account. Mrs. Ward wrote a beautiful tale of trails and tribulations. Faith being the center of this story was wonderfully positive and will impact its reader. Very well done.
