Spartanburg Spitfires' goalie and captain, Isaac Drake, ended last season with an unexpected trip to the playoffs. He's found a home and a family with his coach and mentor, Misha Samarin, and he's looking forward to making a serious run for the Kelly Cup. But things take an interesting turn when Isaac's arch-nemesis, Laurent St. Savoy, is traded to the Spitfires. After Laurent's despicable behavior in the playoffs last year, Isaac wants nothing to do with him - no matter how gorgeous he is. But that changes when Isaac discovers the reason for Laurent's attitude.

Laurent St. Savoy grew up the only son of a legendary NHL goalie in a household rife with abuse. He was constantly treated like a disappointment, on and off the ice. When a desperate attempt to escape his father's tyranny sends him to the Spitfires, the last thing Laurent wants is to make friends. But there's something about Isaac Drake that he can't resist. Laurent has an opportunity to explore his sexuality for the first time, but he's cracking under end-of-the-season pressures. When facing the playoffs and a rivalry turned personal vendetta, Isaac's not sure he's enough to hold on to Laurent - or their relationship.

Empty Net Scoring Chances Book 4 (Audible Audio Edition) Avon Gale Scott R Smith Dreamspinner Press LLC Books

I haven't read the previous book in this series which introduced both Isaac and Laurent but I took a chance on a new-to-me author because I liked the premise of enemies on the ice forced to become teammates. The reasons for Laurent's previous reprehensible behaviour turn out to be heartbreaking and his relationship with Isaac was very touching and enjoyable to read about.

Laurent's physically and emotionally abusive father has left his son psychologically damaged. Isaac is the one who finally sees through Laurent's defences and starts to treat him with understanding and reassurance. Laurent gradually learns to trust Isaac, while Isaac tries to figure out the best ways to help Laurent overcome his harmful behaviours. The relationship between these two was heart-warming and very refreshing in a genre where hardly anything seems new to the jaded reader. The tortured hero who behaves badly is a romance novel staple but this book clearly and believably shows how Laurent's past experiences have caused his current demeanour and attitude.

Isaac is also far from the typical opposite number to the stereotyped tortured hero. He is blue haired, pierced and short for a hockey goalie. He succeeds as an athlete largely due to dedication and love of the game, in contrast to Laurent's physical advantages. Isaac does not comfort Laurent with physical strength but with his lack of judgement and willingness to find new methods of communication that soothe Laurent's anxieties. There is no magic cure here but realistic improvement, one step at a time.

I loved the relationship between the main characters, but I also liked the lower tier pro hockey setting, where the players barely make a living rather than being million dollar superstars. The story moves along at a good pace and there are interesting support characters, including the couple from the previous book, who play their part but don't overstay their welcome. The writing is assured, with entertaining dialogue.

I really enjoyed this book and will check out others from this author.

Empty Net Scoring Chances Book 4 (Audible Audio Edition) Avon Gale Scott R Smith Dreamspinner Press LLC Books Reviews

Isaac Drake is the goalie for the Spartanburg Spitfires. Blue haired, semi-even tempered and steady as a damn rock...until a new goalie comes to his team, and it's the leagues biggest jerk and vocal homophobe..who also happens to be heartbreakingly gorgeous.

(I’m going to stop right here for a moment. While really any book CAN be read as a stand-alone I absolutely positively recommend reading the previous ones. It will give a depth of dimension to this story that you will be robbing yourself of if you haven’t read the previous one(s) so if you haven’t read the previous ones go do it now)

For all others who have read and loved this series..Wondering how this book could possible live up to the emotional depth of the previous ones. I assure you it does.
Isaac Drake and Laurent St. Savoy are simply amazeballs.
If you read the previous book you know Isaac’s backstory, but Laurent…oi.
I was unprepared for how much I was going to love Laurent (aka Saint). I will not spoil.
But Avon Gale has such a gift for writing complex characters with very human and relatable flaws.
And tackling subjects that make you feel like she is sharing a little bit of her soul with you.
I cried ugly tears at this book. UGLY TEARS.
Isaac Drake has had a helluva life, which he offers no apologies for. He’s survived. And finally made peace with the road he had to travel to get to where he is.
And he’s a damn good goalie finally at the top of his game.
So when the owner of the Spartanburg Spitfires hires one of the league’s most notorious trash talkers and bigots to be his new back up. He is not pleased.
Laurent St. Savoy has been traded from the team coached by his father to the Spartanburg Spitfires in what his father hopes is a lesson in consequences for disappointing him.
But, Laurent St. Savoy sees this trade as an opportunity to finally be out from under the shadow of his hockey legend (and all around jerkface) father. And all he wants is to be left the hell alone. He doesn’t want friends. So he immediately falls back on his defense mechanism of trash talking.
Right in the beginning Isaac wants nothing to do with their new goalie, but is determined to set a few ground rules about what being a Spitfire means, but gets more than he bargained for when he catches Laurent in an unguarded and painfully vulnerable moment.
And a tentative friendship blooms between them that slowly turns into something more, but Laurent has a secret demon that’s even bigger than his father, and for him to have a chance at love, it’s going to take a lot more than a new team.
Dude. I LOVED every single scene between Isaac and Laurent. Every single damn scene. Isaac’s quite determination to save Laurent from himself was so incredibly adorable. And Laurent’s tentative steps at repairing the damage he’d done…while he emerged from the shadow of his past to become his own person. I die.
As ALWAYS in Avon Gales’ books the supporting characters are stellar (we got appearances from several from previous books)
And as a closing note. Once of things I love so much about this series is that the author is so clearly a hockey fan. (if you follow her on Twitter, and really you should, you already know this) One of my peeves is writers who write about sports that they oh so clearly know diddly squat about. I hate it.
Avon Gale Loves Hockey. It shows in her writing. And in the small nuances that only a fan would know and understand. Her love for the sport and the weird little quirks are what make the story behind the story so exceptional.
If you haven’t read this series, do yourself a favor and read it.
If you’re scrunching up your nose at what you THINK these books are about. Stop, expand your horizons.
